JAMMU, JANUARY 08: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today morning interacted with the victorious Jammu and Kashmir under-16 cricket team after they clinched the Vijay Merchant Trophy (Plate Group) title, marking a historic achievement for Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister met each player individually and enquired about their personal as well as team performance. Expressing his admiration for their outstanding display on the field, he encouraged the young cricketers to continue their winning momentum and strive for greater excellence in future. He also took keen interest in their academic pursuits and other interests beyond sports.

Congratulating the team on their remarkable feat, the Chief Minister said, “Your victory reflects not just talent, but teamwork, discipline and dedication. You have made the entire J&K proud.”

On the occasion, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presented an appreciation trophy to the victorious team, led by Captain Smagey Khajuria, in recognition of their exceptional performance and contribution to sports in J&K.

It is noteworthy that on January 6, Jammu and Kashmir defeated Mizoram by an innings and 182 runs on the third day of the final played in Surat, Gujarat. With this emphatic win, J&K lifted the Vijay Merchant Trophy for the first time, marking a proud moment in J&K’s sporting history.

CS calls for stronger credit linkages and women-led rural enterprises

Chairs 9th Executive Council meeting of JKRLM

JAMMU, JANUARY 08: Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo today chaired the 9th Executive Council Meeting of the Jammu & Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM) to undertake a comprehensive review of its performance under the UMEED (National Rural Livelihood Mission – NRLM) framework and to chart out a roadmap for strengthening rural livelihoods and women-led development across the UT.

The meeting was attended by Secretary, Rural Development Department (RDD); Managing Director, JKRLM; Director General (Resources); Director General (Budget); Chief Operating Officer, HIMAYAT; Convenor, UTLBC, and other senior officers of the department.

During the deliberations, the Chief Secretary underscored the critical importance of enhancing credit linkages and strengthening the capacity of Self Help Groups (SHGs) so that they are able to transform into sustainable rural enterprises, reiterating that enterprise development remains the core objective behind the formation of SHGs.

He stressed the need for making Community Managed Training Centres (CMTCs) functional in every district, ensuring delivery of high-quality training to SHG members through resource persons from OMPLIS. He emphasised that these centres should emerge as vibrant learning spaces where women feel encouraged to spend time acquiring new skills and upgrading existing ones.

Highlighting the role of financial inclusion at the grassroots level, the Chief Secretary directed that the income of Banking Correspondents (BCs) be enhanced substantially. He called for onboarding Common Service Centres (CSCs) and J&K Bank to increase transaction volumes, thereby improving the earnings and sustainability of BCs.

The Chief Secretary also directed the department to fully leverage the Lal Ded Stree Shakti Scheme and Mission YUVA, urging that women entrepreneurs be encouraged to move beyond the ‘Lakhpati’ benchmark. He set an ambitious target of doubling the number of ‘Millionaire Didis’ from the existing 50 to 100 within the next six months.

Earlier, Secretary RDD, Aijaz Asad, informed that the UMEED programme is currently being implemented across 285 blocks in all 20 districts of Jammu & Kashmir, covering almost the entire rural geography of the UT. He stated that 7,84,053 rural households have been mobilised into 96,000 Self Help Groups, which have further been federated into 7,453 Village Organisations (VOs) and 650 Cluster Level Federations (CLFs).

He added that to strengthen community institutions, capitalisation support of ₹528.86 Cr has been provided to community-based organisations. Further, since 2013-14, ₹2,912.66 Cr in bank credit has been accessed by 67,269 SHGs, significantly deepening financial inclusion and livelihood opportunities in rural areas.

Presenting the achievements of JKRLM, Managing Director, JKRLM, Subhra Sharma, informed that under the Start-up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP), 8,231 rural enterprises have been supported in 14 blocks, with ₹18.71 Cr disbursed as Community Investment Fund (CIF).

She further apprised that farm-based livelihoods interventions have been implemented across all blocks, benefiting 5,15,706 Mahila Kisans through adoption of agro-ecological practices and improved livestock management.

During the current financial year, under CIF, against a physical target of 2,990 SHGs, an achievement of 3,459 SHGs has been recorded, with financial assistance of ₹2,2.49Cr disbursed. Under the Revolving Fund (RF), 1,688 SHGs were supported against a target of 3,026, with ₹2.53 Cr released.

Cumulatively, 78,508 SHGs have received Revolving Fund support amounting to ₹117 Cr, while 65,000 SHGs have been provided CIF support totalling ₹402.83 Cr, as reflected on the official portal.

Under the Lal Ded Stree Shakti Scheme, against a target of 5,000 cases for FY 2025-26, 2,356 cases involving ₹25.59 Cr have been sponsored so far. Of these, 709 cases have already been sanctioned with financial approval of ₹8.50 Cr, providing focused entrepreneurial support to women.

Regarding doorstep banking services, the meeting was informed that 710 SHG members are currently engaged as Banking Correspondents, of which 553 are associated with J&K Bank, significantly strengthening rural banking outreach.

The Lakhpati Didi Mission has shown remarkable progress. Against a target of 2.33 lakh potential Lakhpati Didis, 2.60 lakh women have been identified, and 2.01 lakh women have already been transformed into Lakhpati Didis through a combination of skill development, financial assistance and market linkages.

Highlighting other key interventions, it was informed that 17,511 SHG members have received skill training through ITIs, NIFT, ICICI Foundation, Honda Foundation and the Central University of Jammu. In addition, 7 SARAS Melas and 4 exhibitions have been organised across districts to promote SHG products.

It was further informed that 90 SHG products have been onboarded on major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho. To strengthen market access, 9 District Haats and 8 UMEED Women Haats have been developed, while retail outlets have also been established at airports to showcase and sell SHG products.

In the financial inclusion domain, 337 Bank Mitras and 710 Banking Correspondents have been engaged from among SHG members. Further, 1.79 lakh members have been enrolled under PMJJBY and PMSBY insurance schemes, 476 PLD cases have been disbursed under the Lal Ded Scheme, and 1,56,843 members have been converged with Agriculture, Horticulture and allied departments.

Outlining the roadmap ahead, it was stated that JKRLM will focus on enterprise scaling and diversification, cluster-based growth, capacity building in high-end handicrafts and food processing, financial literacy across all 285 blocks, and strengthening start-up ecosystems through SVEP and MKSP.

The Mission also plans exposure visits to best livelihood models in states such as Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala and Telangana, besides establishing mini common facility centres and processing units in 176 clusters across different districts of J&K.

Prof. M. Y. Khan Assumes Charge as Principal of GDC Hadipora, Rafiabad

Baramulla, January 6: Professor M. Y. Khan recently assumed charge as the Principal of Government Degree College (GDC) Hadipora, Rafiabad, in Baramulla district.

A formal induction ceremony was held on the occasion, during which Prof. Khan was warmly received by Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Ahmad Dar, who had been holding the additional charge of Principal, along with the faculty and staff of the college. The staff members expressed confidence in his leadership and assured him of their full cooperation.

Professor Khan is widely known for his efficiency, dedication, and strong commitment to academic excellence. His appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of growth and innovation at the institution, further strengthening its academic and administrative framework.

The appointment is also being viewed as a positive step toward inclusive and progressive academic leadership, serving as an inspiration for both educators and students alike.

Prior to his present assignment, Professor M. Y. Khan has served in several degree colleges across Jammu and Kashmir, including GDC Baderwah, GDC (Boys) Baramulla, GDC Sopore, and GDC for Women, Nawakadal.

Professor Khan possesses extensive teaching experience in the discipline of Commerce and brings with him wide-ranging administrative exposure.

Satish Sharma applauds BIG JKPL for promoting youth, sports in J&K

JAMMU, JANUARY 6: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, today lauded the organisers of the BIG Jammu & Kashmir Premier League (BIG JKPL) 2025–26 for creating a vibrant and professional sporting platform for the youth of Jammu & Kashmir.

The Minister was speaking after attending the grand finale and prize distribution ceremony of the BIG JKPL at the University of Jammu Ground, where Royal Goodwill Cricket Club emerged champions after a thrilling final.

Satish Sharma felicitated the winning and runner-up teams and congratulated the players for displaying exceptional sportsmanship, discipline and competitive spirit.

Addressing the gathering, Satish Sharma said that the Omar Abdullah-led government is committed towards strengthening the sports infrastructure, encouraging youth participation and nurturing grassroots talent across Jammu & Kashmir. He emphasized that tournaments like BIG JKPL provide local players an opportunity to showcase their talent on a big platform and open pathways for professional careers in sports.

The Minister also appreciated 92.7 BIG FM and its partners for organising a high-quality league that attracted massive public participation and brought together young cricketers from different parts of the Union Territory. He said that such events not only promote physical fitness but also instil values of teamwork, discipline and unity among the youth.

Satish Sharma further said that his department will continue to support initiatives that promote sports and youth engagement. He added that the government aims to make Jammu & Kashmir a hub of sporting excellence.

The BIG JKPL 2025–26 concluded on a high note with huge crowds and an electrifying finale, reflecting the growing popularity of cricket and sports culture in the region.

Women in STEM: KU faculty Dr. Riffat John secures prestigious SPARC research grant

Srinagar January 6: In a significant academic achievement for the University of Kashmir (KU), faculty member Dr. Riffat John, Department of Botany, has been awarded a major research grant under the Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (SPARC) of the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Dr. John has secured the SPARC project titled “Unstructured but Essential: Understanding and Exploiting Intrinsically Disordered Proteins for Climate-Resilient Maize” under the Agri and Food Technologies theme. The project has been approved by the SPARC Apex Committee chaired by the Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India.

Vice-Chancellor, KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, in her message, congratulated Dr. John and said, “The award reflects the University’s growing research footprint and its emphasis on meaningful international collaborations. Such initiatives strengthen interdisciplinary research and contribute to addressing region-specific agricultural and climate challenges.”

She further said that the University remains committed to supporting faculty-led research that aligns scientific inquiry with societal and environmental needs while fostering global academic engagement.

Dean Research, KU, Prof. Mohammad Sultan Bhat also congratulated Dr. John on the achievement and said, “Securing a SPARC grant is highly competitive and reflects the quality and global relevance of the research being undertaken at the varsity.”

The two-year international collaborative project involves research partnership with The Pennsylvania State University, USA, and the Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR), Ludhiana. The project focuses on advancing proteomics-based understanding of maize resilience to cold and low-temperature stress, with relevance for crop adaptation in hilly and cold agro-climatic regions of northern India.

Dr. John will serve as the Principal Investigator from the University of Kashmir, with the collaboration enabling access to advanced protein interaction and intrinsically disordered protein analysis platforms.

The award strengthens the University’s participation in nationally coordinated international research programmes.

Police Registers E-FIR Against Conman for Cheating by False Promise of Release from Police Custody In Shopian

Shopian, January 05: Police in Shopian has arrested a conman for duping an individual by falsely promising to secure the release of his brother from police custody at Police Station Zainapora.
Police Station Shopian received a complaint on 04/01/2026 through WhatsApp from Asif Ahmad Parrah son of Mohd Maqbool Parrah resident of Humhuna, Zainapora. The complainant alleged that a conman, identified as Sajad Ahmad Bhat son of Gh Hassan Bhat resident of Mundoora, Tral, fraudulently took ₹5,40,000/- from him by falsely assuring the release of his brother from police custody. Pertinently, the complainant’s brother Umer Maqbool had been lawfully arrested in connection with FIR No. 108/2025 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act, registered at Police Station Zainapora.
Taking advantage of the situation, the accused falsely claimed to be a government employee and asserted that he had sufficient influence to arrange the release of the complainant’s brother. On this false pretext, he cheated the complainant and fraudulently obtained the said amount.
Taking cognizance of the complaint, Police Station Shopian registered E.FIR No. 03/2026 under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
During the course of investigation, ₹1.50 lakh has been recovered so far from the accused. The accused has been taken into custody, and efforts are underway to recover the remaining amount. Further investigation into the case is in progress.
People are advised to remain vigilant and stay away from individuals who make false claims of influence or promise illegal favours. Any such attempts should be promptly reported to the nearest police station.

Power Minister on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review Hydroelectric Projects

Reviews Salal, Sawalkot and Ratle Projects on day 1

New Delhi, January 4: Shri Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, accompanied by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), Ministry of Power, Government of India, arrived in Jammu earlier today to review the NHPC hydroelectric projects in the Union Territory of J&K.

Shri Bhupendra Gupta, CMD, NHPC briefed the Minister on the progress of various NHPC Hydroelectric projects located in Jammu & Kashmir. The two-day visit includes inspections of projects located in Reasi, Ramban and Kishtwar districts.

Today, Sh. Manohar Lal visited NHPC’s Salal Power Project, where he was apprised of the ongoing works. He directed NHPC to expedite the sediment removal operations of the Salal reservoir. It is pertinent to mention that the Salal Power Station, located on the Chenab River in Reasi district, is undertaking sediment removal works following the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), aimed at removing accumulated silt and maximizing optimal utilization of water resources.

During the visit to the Salal Power Station, the Minister also undertook a plantation drive within the power station premises, underscoring the Government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. He also held discussions with the local administration and senior officials of various concerned departments to ensure coordinated efforts for timely execution of works.

Enroute to Kishtwar, Sh. Manohar Lal conducted an aerial inspection of the Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project (1856 MW).
Upon arrival in Kishtwar, he visited the Ratle Hydroelectric Project, where he laid the foundation stone for the dam concreting works and encouraged the project team to complete the works in an effective and time-bound manner.

Committee on Estimates of J&K Legislative Assembly reviews infra projects in Pulwama

PULWAMA, JANUARY 03: The Committee on Estimates of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly today visited various ongoing infrastructure and industrial project sites at Sampora, Pampore and Lasipora in Pulwama district to assess progress on works and review facilities on the ground.

The committee was led by Advocate Shamima Firdous, MLA Habba Kadal, along with Ghulam Mohiuddin Mir, MLA Rajpora.

The visit was accompanied by Director Industries and Commerce, Khalid Majeed; Joint Director Industries and Commerce, Zahoor Ahmad Magray; General Manager, DIC Pulwama and other senior officers of the Industries and Commerce Department.

During the visit to Industrial Estate Lasipora, the delegation interacted with the industrial unit holders and reviewed the issues related to infrastructure development, power supply, road connectivity and other essential industrial facilities.

The industrialists apprised the committee of their concerns and put forth suggestions for further improvement of the industrial ecosystem.

The Committee assured the stakeholders that all genuine issues raised during the interaction would be taken up with the concerned authorities for timely redressal, with a focus on strengthening the industrial growth and development in Pulwama district.

Police arrests Pickpocket in Kulgam; Recovered stolen cash from her possession

Kulgam, January 01: Police in Kulgam have solved a theft case by arresting an accused woman involved in the commission of crime and recovered stolen cash from her possession.
On 31/12/2025, Police Station Kulgam received a complaint from a woman that a cash of Rs 20,200 was stolen from her pocket while she was attending a patient at District Hospital Kulgam.
Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 143/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Kulgam and investigation was started.
During the course of investigation, and by using all available means one suspect woman identified as Roomi Jan Wife of Sartaj Ahmad Sheikh resident of Sheikh Mohalla Damhal Hanjipora was zeroed in and during questioning, the accused admitted her involvement in the commission of crime. Officers recovered the stolen cash of Rs 20,200/= from her possession and further investigation is going on.

Lieutenant Governor unveils J&K Bank Calendar – 2026

JAMMU, DECEMBER 30: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha on Tuesday unveiled J&K Bank’s Wall and Table Calendars for the year 2026, at Lok Bhavan.
The Wall Calendar for 2026 is themed “Rivers of J&K and Ladakh”, while the Table Calendar showcases the region’s “Historic Places”, reflecting the diversity of human heritage and natural wonders of UT of Jammu & Kashmir and UT of Ladakh.
The Lieutenant Governor appreciated the J&K Bank for selecting unique themes which will raise awareness about preserving ancient monuments, archaeological sites and traditions for future generations. He said society must come together to safeguard these priceless treasures. The Lieutenant Governor also emphasised on protecting earth’s vital ecosystems. He said rivers in J&K UT are source of fresh water and they are also ensuring food security and supporting biodiversity conservation. The Lieutenant Governor called for community efforts to protect rivers and water bodies to build resilience against climate impacts in the future.
