Bashir Ahmad Sheikh is no more

Srinagar: Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, son of late Mohammad Jawad Sheikh of Mohalla Syed Afzal Sheribhat here, passed away on Wednesday at SKIMS Soura after a brief illness.

The deceased, an ex-president of the Hussaini Khidmatgar Committee of Syed Afzal Mohalla, was also well known as an Islamic and social activist.

All walks of life participated in his Nimaz-e-Jinazah (funeral prayers), led by Aga Syed Adeel Murtaza Al-Mosvi Al-Safvi.

Abdul Qayoom Rather, active president of the Hussaini Khidmatgar Committee, said that Sheikh’s contribution to the Hussaini Khidmatgar Committee is unforgettable. He always spoke to the committee members about brotherhood, peace, and prosperity”.

Tanveer Ahmad Rather, a local resident, said that “Sheikh was a pious, kind-hearted, down-to-earth, and staunch believer of Ahlebait (as)”.

His congregational Fateha Khawani will be held on July 9 at their graveyard at Mohalla Syed Afzal, opposite Government Girls Higher Secondary School Zadibal, Srinagar, at 7:00 a.m. After that, a daylong condolence meeting will be held at Iqbal Khomani Hall at Mohalla Syed Afzal.

Government notifies 21 more crafts from Kashmir as ‘Notified Handicrafts’

SRINAGAR, JULY 07: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has notified 21 more crafts from Kashmir as “Notified Handicrafts” thereby acknowledging the scores of artisans’ associated with the crafts.
Notification of these crafts was a long pending demand of the artisans associated with these crafts and shall enable the artisans to gain a sense of pride and identity.
It shall also enable the department to register the artisans in the erstwhile left out crafts which shall in turn ensure preservation and protection of these traditional skills from being lost over time. By registering these artisans their knowledge and expertise shall be documented, ensuring their techniques and craftsmanship are safeguarded for future generations.
Besides, the artisans shall gain access to various government support programs which will help in increasing the number of genuine artisan community and such a measure will extend the benefits of the government schemes to the hitherto unrecognized artisan segments of the society by which they can avail the Artisan/Weavers Credit scheme, Karkhandar scheme, Assistance under the Cooperative Act, MUDRA Scheme and educational benefits for their kin’s.
The artisans shall be brought at par with other registered artisans to open up avenues for artisans to showcase and market their products to a wider audience by participation in exhibitions, trade fairs, and cultural events hosted by the department where they can promote and sell their crafts.
Notification of these crafts comes at the time when the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir is pitching hard for Geographical Indication (GI) of all the indigenous crafts of Kashmir.
The crafts which have been notified include, Sozni Embroidery, Staple Embroidery, Khatamband, Paper Pulp, Kharadi, Glazed Pottery, Katas, Copperware Engraving, Copperware Sakhta, Pottery, Calligraphy, Painting, Handicrafts Furniture, Handmade Aromatics, Handmade Soap, Filigree, Mosaic Craft, Wagguv, Shikara, Willow Bat, Innovative Crafts. Besides the 21 crafts of Kashmir, 10 crafts of Jammu have also been declared as “Notified Crafts”.
Director Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir expressed his satisfaction for inclusion of these crafts as Notified Crafts under the provision of the Jammu and Kashmir Handicrafts Quality Control Act 1978 which would address the demand of a wide sector of artisans who are associated with these crafts.
“We are taking several initiatives in reaching out to the artisans in Kashmir. Proactive marketing, curbs on fake handicraft products, special incentives to artisans and operationalizing of GI-system for Handicrafts are some of the major ongoing initiatives that are underway”, he said.

KU faculty members express deep gratitude to Honourable LG over landmark decision to increase retirement age of University professors

Thank Chief Secretary, Vice-Chancellor, Secretary HED for fulfilling long-pending demand

Srinagar, July 6: The teaching fraternity of the University of Kashmir on Thursday welcomed the UT administration’s historic decision to enhance the retirement age of University professors to 65 years as per the UGC guidelines.
In a statement, the faculty members across University’s main and satellite campuses expressed their deep gratitude to the Honourable LG (Honorable Chancellor, University of Kashmir), Shri Manoj Sinha, for taking the historic decision of increasing the retirement age and thus fulfilling the long-pending demand of the University professors.
The faculty members said the UT administration’s landmark decision will go a long way in further boosting the academic progression of the University and addressing the faculty shortage in the University to secure the academic interest of the student community.
The faculty members also thanked the worthy Chief Secretary, J&K, Dr Arun Kumar Mehta and Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Department, Shri Alok Kumar, for their unflinching commitment to increase the retirement of University professors with this landmark decision taken under the dynamic leadership of the Honourable LG.
The University faculty also places on record its deep gratitude and appreciation to the Honourable Vice-Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof Nilofer Khan for relentlessly pursuing the demand for increasing the retirement age of University professors with the larger objective of strengthening the University’s teaching and research arenas.
The faculty members asserted that the University of Kashmir has already made big strides, including the much-acclaimed recognition of NIRF rank 33, under the leadership of the Honourable Chancellor and is marching ahead on the path of academic excellence.
“The entire teaching fraternity of the University assures the Honorable Chancellor and the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of continuing to work with greater dedication and commitment to realise the objectives of the flagship National Education Policy-2020 and to transform the University of Kashmir into a centre of excellence in near future,” the faculty members said in the statement.

Police arrests 2 persons for harassing a girl in Baramulla

Baramulla, July 06: Police in Baramulla have arrested 02 eve-teasers for harassing a girl at Zanana Park Khawajabagh.
Police Station Baramulla received a written complaint from one person (name withheld) stating therein that the two persons namely Aqib Salam Bhat @Ponty son of Abdul Salam Bhat & Yasir Ahmad Bhat son of Fayaz Ahmad Bhat both residents of Fatehpora Baramulla harassed/molested one girl (name withheld) at Zanana Park Khawajabagh and fled from the spot after committing the crime. In this regard, a case under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Baramulla and investigation was initiated.
On receipt of this information, a police party led by SHO PS Baramulla under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Baramulla Shri Altaf Ahmad-JKPS raided at the various suspected spots. After the strenuous efforts, both the involved persons were arrested and have been shifted to police station where they remain in custody.
Further investigation of the case is going on.

Police busts sex racket in Baramulla; 6 including 2 females arrested

Baramulla, July 05: Police in Baramulla have busted a sex racket and arrested 06 persons.
Police received an information through reliable sources that some persons are involved in immoral activities in a rented house near Bus Stand Baramulla. Acting upon the information, a Police Party led by SHO PS Baramulla under the supervision of DySP Hqrs Baramulla busted the prostitution racket. The racket was run by a tenant identified as Lateef Ahmad Chechi son of Mohammad Younis Chechi resident of Malangam Bandipora, besides, Altaf Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Ahmad Dar resident of Kralhar Baramulla, Khurshid Ahmad Chechi son of Abdul Rashid Chechi resident of Malangam Bandipora, Manzoor Ahmad Khan son of Saifuddin Khan resident of Qazi Hamam Baramulla and two female sex workers (name withheld) were also detained.
Accordingly, a case vide FIR No.136/2023 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Baramulla and further investigation has been initiated.
Police once again requested the netizens to do tenant verification before given their Houses/rooms/shops on rent.

Jammu: MAM College faculty, Dr Vishal Sharma has been “selected for attending conference on Climate Change and SDGs at United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, USA.”

A handout said: “Son of the soil, Dr. Vishal Sharma S/O Smt. Kanta Devi & Late Sh. Shruti Paul Sharma hails from Basohli, Dist. Kathua, J&K and serving as H. O. D Electronics, Maulana Azad Memorial College Jammu & Fulbright Climate Fellow-USA, Global Goals Ambassador-United Nations (UN) association USA, has been selected for attending the prestigious “Global Climate-SDG Synergies Conference” at United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York, USA on 16th July, 2023.”

“This conference holds great significance as it is convened by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in association with the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development,” the handout added.

CJM Kishtwar Alnasir chairs drug awareness prog at school

Jammu: The Tehsil Legal Services Committee, Kishtwar organised “Awareness Programme, on the occasion of International Drug Day” at SDM Higher Secondary School, Kishtwar.

The function was presided over by Chief Judicial Magistrate Kishtwar, Mahmud Anwar Alnasir, who was Chief Guest on this occasion.

And handout said “The Resource persons in the said function were Mr. Naveed DyLADC and Ms. Anjali Gulati as well as Mr. Suman Advocate.”

“About two hundred boys and girl students participated in the awareness campaign. The students actively took part in the deliberations. Staff of the school was also present,” the handout added.

The speakers on this occasion highlighted the role of being cautious and vigilante about the drug peddlers around the school campuses. The Chairman TLSC Alnasir impressed upon the students not to fall prey the lucrative propositions made to students to be couriers for some easy money.

“They must guard themselves from the bad influences and be their own role models. The takeaway lesson from Aryan Khan’s case is that at time being in wrong company at the wrong place could lead you to serious trouble,” Al Nasir said.

“Kishtwar has more than 27cases of Narcotics (NDPS) which involve youngsters and this does not include, cases which involve commercial quantities before this Sessions Court.”

“It’s high time youngsters which are more vulnerable and prone to being the victims of such drug peddlers, who might lure them into trafficking. They must be careful about their company and peer groups and if any such person comes to their notice, they must report it to concerned authorities or teachers about such happenings,” the handout added.

Police attaches properties worth lakhs of drug smugglers in Baramulla

BARAMULLA, June 29: Acting tough against the drug smugglers and to eradicate the menace of drugs from the society, Police have attached properties worth lakhs of drug smugglers in Baramulla.
Police party led by SDPO Pattan assisted by SHO PS Pattan under the supervision of SSP Baramulla Shri Amod Ashok Nagpure-IPS, attached an under construction house on land measuring 10 marlas at Main Mohalla Pattan belonging to drug Smuggler namely Barakat Ali Main son of Mohammad Maqbool Main resident of Mian Mohalla Pattan after obtaining legal sanction from competent authorities. The said house was linked to case FIR No. 84/2023 under section 8/22 NDPS Act of Police Station Pattan. The investigation proved that the said immovable property was raised/ used for illicit trafficking by the drug Smuggler.
Similarly, Baramulla Police led bySDPO Kreeri Shri Khalid Ashraf-JKPS assisted by SHO PS Kreeri attached vehicle Hyundai i10 bearing registration number DL2AE-2820 belonging to Abdul Rehman Malik son of Ghulam Mohd resident of Kalantra Payeen after obtaining legal sanction from the competent authorities. The said vehicle was linked to case FIR No 33/2023 under section 8/20, 29 NDPS Act of Police Station Kreeri. The investigation proved that the said movable property was used for Illicit Trafficking by the drug Smuggler.
People showed their willingness to support police to eradicate menace of drugs from the society which is the real sign of Police Public relationship.
Community members are requested to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling in their neighbourhood. Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace.

Complex Spine surgery successfully conducted at DH Kulgam

KULGAM, JUNE 28: Orthopaedics Department of District Hospital (DH) Kulgam successfully conducted spine surgery on a 30 year old male who had sustained spine trauma due to fall from height.

The patient had L1 bust fracture with bony fragments compressing the spinal cord. D12_L2 instrumented stabilization with decompression at L1 was done. The patient is recovering well after the surgery.

Under the Logistic support of Medical Superintendent, Dr Gulzar Ahmad; Consultant Orthopedics, Dr Towseef Ahmad Bhat conducted the surgery with able assistance by Dr Aabid Hussain and Dr Khursheed Ahmad.

Anesthesia team included Dr Anees, Dr Nuzhat and Dr Shafkat and support staff included Gh Mohi U Din, Imtiyaz Ahmad, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Farooq Ahmad, Farooq Ahmad (c arm tech).

Police Inaugurates Cricket Tournament in Shopian; Women’s volleyball Tournament concluded

SHOPIAN: In a remarkable initiative to promote sports and community engagement, Police under the auspices of the Civic Action Programme inaugurated the Cricket Tournament, concluded the Women’s Volleyball tournament and organised the Martial Art Competition in Shopian.

The opening ceremony of the Cricket Tournament and other sports/Martial Art competition was held at Batpora Stadium where teams from various localities and villages gathered to showcase their skills and compete for the coveted trophy. The events witnessed the presence of distinguished guests, school Childrens, community leaders and enthusiastic spectators, who came together to support the participating athletes.

During the inaugural ceremony, the senior police officers highlighted the significance of sports in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and overall personality development. They underscored the role of sports in empowering youth/women, instilling discipline and nurturing leadership qualities.

While speaking on the occasion, SSP Shopian Ms Tanushree-IPS stressed upon the young & budding players of the district to allow their minds to explore their own thoughts and imagination through the medium of sports. The inaugural match was played between Friends cricket Club Safanagri Vs Sheen Sports Chotigam which was won by Friends Cricket Club by 20 runs.

Moreover, the Final of Women’s Volleyball was played between Shahi Hamdan school vs Khelo India Centre Shopian which was won by Khelo India Centre by 6:1 points. The event was attended by all senior police officers of the district. At the end, presents/mementos were distributed among the winning and participating teams/players by SSP Shopian in presence of ASP Shopian, Dysp Hqrs Shopian and DySP DAR Shopian.

It is pertinent to mention here that Police is organising different sports events, like volleyball tournament, football tournament, cultural programmes and other co-curricular activities in district Shopian for upliftment of sports among the youth.
