GCOE Srinagar kick-starts Fit India Movement-2025

Director Colleges, Nodal Principal Kashmir Division Colleges flag-off the run

SRINAGAR, APRIL 05: Government College of Education (IASE) M. A. Road, Srinagar Saturday kick-started the Fit India Movement (Men/Women) 2025 with an inspiring event promoting physical fitness and wellness across the campus.

The run was officially flagged-off by Director Colleges Higher Education Department (HED), Prof. (Dr.) Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, along with Dr. Seema Naz, Nodal Principal Kashmir Division Colleges.

As many as 100 students of various colleges of the city participated in the event.

The run commenced from the main gate of the host college, passed through M. A. Road, Dalgate and culminated at Nehru Park Srinagar.

On the occasion, participants were encouraged to engage in physical exercises and wellness discussions to enhance their understanding of holistic health.

Students from both male and female categories participated actively in the event, reflecting the institution’s commitment to promoting fitness among all sections of the community.

This event was a great step towards fostering a culture of fitness and healthy living in academic institutions, with both Director Colleges Higher Education and Nodal Principal Kashmir Division Colleges playing pivotal roles in driving this message forward.

On the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Sheikh Ajaz said that the initiative is aligned with the goals of the Fit India Movement, aiming to encourage citizens, especially the younger generation, to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. By focusing on both male and female participants, the event emphasizes fitness as an inclusive, essential aspect of life, breaking down gender barriers in physical wellness activities.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from both male and female students, as well as faculty and staff members, reflecting the institution’s commitment to fostering a culture of health and wellness, he added.

Prof. (Dr.) Seema said that this initiative aligns with the broader objectives of the Fit India Movement, aiming to inspire individuals to prioritize their health and lead active lifestyles. GCOE’s active involvement serves as a model for educational institutions, highlighting the role of academia in national health campaigns.

Dr. Seema also emphasized the importance of staying fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, urging participants to continue with their fitness journeys beyond the event.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurates Almond Bloom Festival-2025 at Badamwari

SRINAGAR, APRIL 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday inaugurated the Almond Bloom Festival-2025 at Badamwari (Almond Alcove) in Srinagar’s historic old city, heralding the arrival of spring in Kashmir.

“With blossoms in full glory, their fragrance fills every corner, marking the arrival of spring in Kashmir. This festival is not just a celebration of nature’s beauty but also an effort to boost tourism and promote our cultural heritage,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said.


The event was organized by the Tourism Department in collaboration with the Floriculture Department and witnessed participation from top officials, artists and a large number of visitors, including students and tourists.

Minister of Transport Satish Sharma, Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Director Floriculture, Director Tourism, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.


The highlight of the festival was a grand cultural and musical show, featuring mesmerizing performances by renowned Kashmiri artists. Their soulful music captivated the audience, adding to the charm of the event. The festival also included traditional folk performances, handicraft exhibitions and stalls showcasing Kashmiri handicrafts giving visitors a taste of the Valley’s rich cultural heritage.

CM Omar Abdullah flags off free bus service for women across J&K

SRINAGAR, APRIL 1: In a landmark move towards gender-inclusive mobility, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today flagged off the Zero-Ticket Travel Initiative (free bus service) for women of Jammu and Kashmir from the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Center (SKICC).

The initiative, fulfilling a key budget announcement, ensures free travel for women in all Smart City e-buses and J&K Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) buses across the Union Territory.

Before the official flag-off, the Chief Minister also inaugurated Zero-Ticket Travel for schoolgirls, underscoring the government’s commitment to accessible and safe transportation for young students.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted that this initiative is more than just a welfare measure—it is a bold step towards women’s empowerment and inclusive development.

“Starting today, women across Jammu and Kashmir will travel free of cost in all Smart City and SRTC buses. This isn’t just about affordability; it’s about accessibility, safety, and creating an environment where women feel empowered to travel freely. Our vision is to make J&K a model of inclusive growth where no woman is held back due to mobility constraints,” he said.

The Chief Minister also referred to his Budget Speech, in which he had announced free ridership for women in government transport, including Smart City e-buses.

“During the budget, we made a special announcement for women that our RTC buses and Smart City e-buses would be free to use after 1st April. Today, we started the service with the hope that it will be easier for them to travel, whether it is for education, shopping, work or sightseeing,” Omar Abdullah said.

“We hope that they will be able to travel all over Jammu and Kashmir in a safe environment,” he remarked. The scheme, which was first announced on March 7 during the Chief Minister’s Budget Speech, is part of a broader series of pro-women and pro-poor initiatives aimed at fostering social and economic empowerment.

Accompanying the Chief Minister at the launch event were Minister for Social Welfare Sakeena Itoo, Minister for Transport Satish Sharma, Advisor to CM Nasir Aslam Wani, MLA Zadibal Tanveer Sadiq, along with senior government officials, including Commissioner Secretary Housing & Urban Development, Transport Commissioner J&K, Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation (who is also CEO Srinagar Smart City Limited), Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and Managing Director State Road Transport Corporation.

Police Files Charge Sheet in 10-Year-Old Case in Baramulla

Baramulla, March 27: In a significant development, Police Station Boniyar successfully filed a charge sheet in a 10 year old case (FIR No. 03/2016) under Section 420 RPC in court, marking the culmination of a decade-long legal pursuit.
This breakthrough was achieved due to the relentless efforts of a dedicated police team deputed to Jharkhand, who worked tirelessly to apprehend the accused Manoj Das resident of Deoghar, Jharkhand. Das was involved in an online bank fraud case amounting to ₹90,000 in 2016. The team ensured his production before the court, demonstrating exceptional dedication and commitment to duty.
Police appreciates the outstanding efforts of the team involved in this operation. We remain committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice, no matter how long it takes.

CM Omar Abdullah inaugurates Tulip Show-2025

Asia’s largest Tulip Garden opens to visitors in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, MARCH 26: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today inaugurated the Tulip Show-2025 at the iconic Tulip Garden in Srinagar, marking the arrival of spring in Kashmir.

Nestled at the foothills of the Zabarwan Range, this garden—the largest of its kind in Asia—was officially opened to visitors.

The garden boasts a breathtaking display of 1.5 million spring-blooming bulbs featuring over 74 tulip varieties, alongside vibrant daffodils, hyacinths, and muscari, offering a spectacular floral experience.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the Tulip Show as a celebration of Kashmir’s diverse natural beauty and a key attraction for nature lovers worldwide.

He emphasized Jammu and Kashmir’s timeless charm and scenic landscapes, inviting tourists to explore its unmatched splendor.

Interacting with visitors, Chief Minister Abdullah welcomed them to the “Paradise on Earth”, encouraging them to cherish and share their experiences of the Tulip Garden in their home countries.

The inaugural day saw an overwhelming response from tourists and locals alike, who marveled at the mesmerizing floral expanse.

Accompanying the Chief Minister were Minister for Agriculture, Javid Ahmad Dar, Advisor to Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, and several Members of the Legislative Assembly.

Senior officials present at the occasion included ACS to Chief Minister, Dheeraj Gupta; Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri; DC Srinagar Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat; Director Floriculture Kashmir Shakeel-ur-Rehman; and other senior officers from the Floriculture Department.

GCOE holds 2-Day International Conference to address, prevent crimes against women

Srinagar, March 19: The Govt. College of Education (IASE), M.A. Road, Srinagar launched a ground breaking two-day International Conference titled ‘Voices for Change: Addressing and Preventing Crimes Against Women’ today in collaboration with the Asha Paras for Peace and Harmony Foundation (APPHF) India and Soroptimist International, Srinagar Kashmir.

With the aim to address the pervasive issue of violence against women and girls, the conference brings together experts, policymakers and advocates to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices in preventing and responding to the violence against women.

The objectives include raising awareness of crimes against women, discussing strategies for prevention and intervention, fostering collaboration between policymakers, academics, activists, and community leaders and amplifying women’s voices and advocating for systemic change

The inaugural session commenced with the felicitation of the esteemed dignitaries and welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Seema Naz, Principal of the host college and the Nodal Principal of Kashmir Division Colleges.

She emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing crimes against women and acknowledged the support of collaborating institutions.

This was followed by the official release of Smart Digest of the Conference by Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Mobin, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar, and Prof. (Dr.) Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, Director of Colleges, UT of J&K.

The experts including Dr. Tawheeda Rasool, Coordinator of the Women’s Studies Centre; Prof. Asha Shukla, Former Vice-Chancellor of BRAUSS and Managing Director of APPHF India; Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Mobin, Vice Chancellor, Cluster University Srinagar; Prof. (Dr.) Sheikh Aijaz, Director of Colleges, UT of J&K and Ruth Healey, President of Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI); Prof Gurmeet Kaur, Former, Head Department of Languages, GCOE, Srinagar; Prof. (Dr.) Parveen Pandith, President of Soroptimist International Srinagar; Erinda Shah, Founder of Mental Health First Aid India Pvt. Ltd; Bisma Qazi , SP Srinagar East Zone, and Syed Sleet Shah, Dy. SP Hqrs Srinagar also spoke on the occasion.

The experts provided an overview of the conference’s objectives, highlighted the significance of strengthening institutional responses to gender-based crimes, promoting gender equity and preventing violence against women, human trafficking & false marriages.

Experts from law enforcement elaborated on the role of law enforcement in protecting women’s rights and ensuring justice. They also deliberated upon the new criminal laws like BNS 2023 (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita).

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Irfat Ara Khan, Head Department of Psychology, who expressed gratitude to the speakers, attendees, and organizers for their contributions to the conference.

Meanwhile, the Wall of Gender Equality curated by Arshid Sualeh, Art Teacher was also inaugurated on the occasion.

The session was moderated by Dr Shaheena Rasool (Coordinator, Teacher Education), and the proceedings were documented by Dr. Shabina, Head Dept. of English and Shawana Manzoor, Head, Dept. of EVS.

DGP J&K Holds Public Grievance Redressal programme at PCR Kashmir; Citizens Share Concerns

Srinagar, March 19: In a significant initiative to strengthen public-police relations and promote transparency, the DGP Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Nalin Prabhat-IPS, conducted a Public Grievance Redressal programme at the Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir today. The event offered citizens a unique opportunity to engage directly with the top police leadership, voice their concerns, and seek resolutions for their grievances.

The programme was attended by senior police officers, including IGP Kashmir Shri V K Birdi, DIG Central Kashmir Range, SSP Srinagar, and SSP Security & SSP PCR Kashmir.

Around 200 public delegations, representing individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds, actively participated in the programme. All the grievances were taken note of for appropriate action.

The DGP gave a patient hearing to the concerns of the citizens, assuring them that their grievances would be addressed promptly and fairly. He directed the concerned officers to take swift action on the issues and ensure timely follow-up on cases requiring further investigation. Several applications were addressed & resolved with on-the-spot directions by the DGP. He encouraged citizens to maintain open communication with the police and assured them that their concerns would be treated with the highest priority.

The DGP emphasized the importance of such direct interactions, urging the public to approach the police without hesitation. He noted that these engagements play a vital role in resolving issues at the grassroots level, enhancing community safety, and fostering a positive, collaborative relationship between the police and the public.

The programme further strengthened the public’s trust and confidence in the Jammu and Kashmir Police. It reflects the J&K Police’s steadfast commitment to transparency, accountability, and the overall safety and well-being of the community.

J&K Police Officer Amran Farooq Inducted into CBI as SP

Srinagar, Mar 18: Amran Farooq, a 2008-batch officer of the Jammu & Kashmir Police Service, has been appointed as Superintendent of Police (SP) in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a four-year tenure.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the competent authority has approved Farooq’s induction into the CBI. His appointment will be effective from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Amran Farooq who is known for his rectitude and honesty is currently serving as Additional SP in the Criminal Investigation Department’s Special Branch (CID SB) in Kashmir.

Police solve 10-year-old fraud case in Baramulla, accused arrested

Baramulla, March 16: In a significant breakthrough, Police in Baramulla have successfully solved a decade-old fraud case and arrested the accused involved in the criminal activity.
The 10-year-old case dating back to year 2016, registered at Police Station Boniyar vide FIR No. 3/2016 under section 420 of RPC was solved with the arrest of Manoj Das resident of Deoghar Jharkhand, involved in an online Bank Fraud case amounting of Rs 90,000/.
Further investigation is underway.
Police remain committed to ensuring public safety and urges citizens to cooperate with police and report any suspicious activities to help maintain peace and order in the community.

KU’s Sajid Dar selected as regional head of coach education by AIFF

Srinagar, March 10: Mr. Sajid Yousuf Dar, football coach at the University of Kashmir (KU), has been selected as Regional Head of Coach Education- North India by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Additionally, he has been selected as a member of the four-member Study Group tasked with evaluating the performance of India’s national football teams in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, congratulated Mr. Sajid on this accomplishment, stating, “This is a proud moment for the University. His selection at such a prestigious level reflects his dedication and expertise in football coaching. We are confident that he will make a significant impact in Indian football.”

The university community extended its best wishes to Mr. Sajid Yousuf Dar, recognizing his contributions to sports and his commitment to nurturing football talent at the grassroots level.
