Srinagar Police Arrests Fraudster Impersonating Government Official, Promising Drug Peddler’s Release for Bribe

Srinagar, January 07: Police in Srinagar have arrested a fraudster who falsely claimed to be a government officer in order to defraud an individual of substantial sum of money promising to release a drug peddler destined under drug related crime.

On 06/01/2025, a complaint was filed by Ms. Safiya Riyaz wife of Riyaz Ahmad Channa accusing Sadiq Hassan Chaloo, a resident of Shaheedgunj, of impersonating a government officer and defrauding her of ₹2 lakh. The accused person falsely claimed influence to facilitate the release of her husband, who had been arrested on 19/11/2024 by Police Station Rajbagh in a narcotics case. After she discovered the deception and demanded the money back, the accused person returned only a partial amount and denied the rest.

In this connection, a case under sections 318(4), 319 and 351(2) of the BNS Act has been registered and the fraudster has been arrested. The investigation is ongoing.

It is pertinent to mention here that the husband of the applicant Riyaz Ahmad Channa had been booked under PIT NDPS Act and is presently lodged in Sub Jail Baderwah.

We urge the public not fall prey to any individual claiming to have influence with law enforcement authorities, and anyone making such claim should be immediately reported to the nearest Police Station or dial 112.

Conman arrested by police in Srinagar for fraudulent promise of police favour

Srinagar, January 05: Police Station Nowhatta received a written complaint from an individual namely Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, son of Bakhtawar Sheikh, resident of Zahid Pora, Hawal, alleging therein that a conman, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mohd Sultan Sheikh, resident of Sheikh Colony, Makhdoom Sahib, had fraudulently taken Rs 30,000 from him to secure the release of Showkat’s brother namely Sajad Sheikh, from the custody of Police in connection with Case FIR No. 55/2024 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sajad Sheikh, son of Bakhtawar Sheikh, resident of Sheikh Colony, Hawal, was lawfully arrested by Police Station Nowhatta in the aforementioned case. However, the accused person namely Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, exploited the situation by falsely claiming influence to arrange the release of complainant’s brother from custody, thereby, fraudulently taking Rs 30,000 from the complainant.

Taking cognizance of the complaint, Police Station Nowhatta registered case FIR No. 01/2025 under Section 318 of BNS. During investigation, Police successfully recovered the entire amount from the accused person.

Further investigation into the case is going on.

CM Omar Abdullah conducts surprise checks at Kashmir’s premier Medical Institutions

Sets January 2025 deadline for operationalizing additional block at Bone & Joint Hospital, Barzulla

SRINAGAR, DECEMBER 25: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today conducted surprise inspections of premier Health Institutions in Srinagar to gain firsthand knowledge of the facilities and services being provided to patients and their attendants.

Chief Minister visited the Bone & Joint Hospital, Barzulla, one of the region’s top Orthopaedic healthcare facilities.

During his inspection, he toured various sections and wards, interacting with patients and attendants to understand their concerns.

Accompanied by Minister of Health, Sakeena Itoo, Senior Faculty Members and Doctors, the Chief Minister engaged with hospital staff to assess the winter arrangements, treatment facilities and the availability of medical professionals and paramedics.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also inspected the state-of-the-art additional block of the hospital, constructed under the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project (JTFRP) with funding from the World Bank.

Designed with earthquake-resilient technology, the block will add 160 beds, increasing the hospital’s total capacity from 150 to 310 beds.

During his visit, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to expedite the completion of the new block, which is critical for addressing the space crunch caused by a fire incident in 2022 that reduced the hospital’s original capacity of 200 beds.

He directed the executing agencies to ensure its swift operationalization by January 2025 to enhance patient care and to dedicate the facility to public service.

Chief Minister also inspected the 500-bedded Children’s Hospital in Bemina, where he interacted with patients, attendants, and hospital staff.

During his visit, attendants from far-flung areas raised concerns about the lack of a Sarai (inn) for their stay.

The Chief Minister immediately directed the concerned authorities to construct a Sarai to accommodate attendants and alleviate their difficulties.

The hospital staff highlighted the challenges of expanding super-specialty facilities due to express space constraints.

The Chief Minister assured them that the issue would be addressed on priority.

He also promised to resolve the shortage of medical staff, including doctors and paramedics, not only at this hospital but across healthcare facilities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister instructed hospital authorities to ensure the timely availability of medicines and other essential facilities for patients.

During the inspections, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reiterated his government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure ensuring better facilities for the public and addressing manpower shortages in health institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister was accompanied during his visits by Minister of Health Sakeena Itoo, Medical Superintendent of the Children’s Hospital, senior faculty members and other concerned officials.

Cyber Cell of J&K Police traced/recovered 68 missing/stolen mobile-phones, solves online money/financial scam in Ganderbal

Ganderbal, November 14: Cyber Cell of J&K Police have recovered 68 missing/stolen mobile-phones worth lakhs of rupees and solved huge online money/financial scam fraud in Ganderbal.

During the current year, multiple applications and reports were received from the general public about missing/stolen of their mobile phones by Cyber Cell of J&K Police in Ganderbal. Acting upon these applications and reports, a special and dedicated team of Cyber Cell Ganderbal led by SI Gowhar Nazir under the supervision of Addl. SP Ganderbal Shri Malik Aijaz-JKPS recovered 68 mobile phones from different places which were either lost or stolen. Out of which, 50 mobile phones were handed over to their legal owners and remaining 18 mobile phones are being handed over to their legal owners.

Moreover, Cyber Cell Ganderbal solved huge Online Financial Fraud Cases in which an amount of ₹1,63,449/= was recovered and has been refunded to the victim’s account & amount of ₹11,45,669.08/= was put on hold on receipt of various complaints. Besides, more than 44 cases regarding blackmailing & social media account hackings have been solved.

Police solves theft case in Srinagar, 2 accused arrested

Srinagar, November 11: Police in Srinagar solved a theft case by arresting 02 accused persons involved in the commission of crime and recovered stolen property from their possession.

On 07-11-2024, Police Station Shalteng received a complaint from one individual namely Shabaz Geelani son of Anwar Geelani resident of Tawheed Abad Maloora stating therein that on 06-11-2024 some unknown burglars have entered his residential house at Tawheed Abad Maloora and have stolen copper utensils, cash, mobile phone etc.

Subsequently, a case vide FIR No. 84/2024 under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Shalteng and investigation was initiated.

Upon receipt of this information, police constituted a special team under the supervision of SHO PS Shalteng to identify the accused persons involved in the commission of crime. During the course of investigation, after strenuous efforts and with the help of technical input, two accused persons identified as Shahid Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Hamid Bhat and Aqib Ahmad Sofi son of Bashir Ahmad Sofi resident of Maloora were found to be involved in the commission of crime. Both the accused persons have been arrested and upon their disclosure, stolen property was recovered from their possession.

General public have appreciated the efforts of police for cracking/solving the case. Police urges the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts by reporting any suspicious activities in their neighbourhood. Cooperation from the community is crucial in maintaining safety and security across the district.
