Police solves theft case in Srinagar; accused arrested within hours

Srinagar, February 21: Police in Srinagar has solved a theft case by arresting the accused person involved in the commission of crime and recovered stolen property from his possession.

Police Station Lal Bazar received a written complaint from one person namely Maqsood Ahmed Baba son of Ab Ahad Baba resident of Arzan Sahib Sopore A/P Jogi Wan Lal Bazar, stating therein that an unknown thief barged into his bread shop located in Jogiwan Lal Bazar and stole cash amounting to Rs 34000 and some copper utensils. Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 07/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Lal bazar and investigation initiated.

After strenuous efforts and analysis of evidence, the Police team apprehended an accused person identified as Asif Majeed Parry son of Abdul Majeed Parry resident of Waltengoo Kund Kulgam within hours after the commission of crime. During investigation, it came to fore that the thief had stolen DVR of CCTV cameras installed in a local mosque so as to evade any possibility of disclosure of his identity.

Upon his disclosure, stolen cash amount of ₹33731, DVR Of CCTV Camera of Masjid-e-Rahman, Jogiwan Lal bazar and copper utensils were also recovered. Further investigation of the case is in progress.

Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearby Police unit or Dial-112 without delay so that prompt action against the culprits will be taken. J&K Police is committed to protecting citizens and eliminating social crimes.

Dir Information reviews performance, functioning of department

Emphasis on strengthening media coordination, improving public engagement through digital platforms

JAMMU, FEBRUARY 14: Director Information J&K, Nitish Rajora, emphasized enhanced public outreach, efficient communication strategies, timely dissemination of government initiatives as well as strengthening media coordination and improving public engagement through digital platforms.
The Director made these remarks while chairing a meeting to review the performance and functioning of the Department of Information and Public Relations at Media Complex here today.
Joint Director Information (Hqrs), Viveik Puri; Joint Director Information Jammu, Atul Gupta; Joint Director Information Kashmir, Shahnawaz Bhukhari; Deputy Director Information (PR) Deepak Dubey; Deputy Director Information (Central) Sunil Kumar; Deputy Director PR Kashmir Ahsan Ul Haq Chisti; Deputy Director PR Jammu Ankush Hans; Cultural Officers, Field Publicity Officers, Information Officers and other concerned officers attended the meeting, either in person or through video conferencing.

During the meeting, the Director underscored the importance of proactive communication for the public good. He urged the officers to adopt innovative approaches to highlight developmental programs, welfare schemes and policy decisions of the government.
The Director laid special emphasis on leveraging social media and digital platforms for real-time updates and public feedback, ensuring transparency and accountability. He called upon the officers to adopt timely strategies for debunking fake news.
While reviewing manpower position and other issues of the department, he called upon the officers to speed up the process for filling of vacant posts. He also called upon the officers to organise regular training courses for staff of the department to abreast them with latest trends of public relations.
The Director, on the occasion, called upon the officers to commit themselves towards strengthening the government-public interface and enhancing public trust through efficient and responsible information dissemination.

Police provides financial assistance to Association of Deaf & Dumb under (CAP) in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 14: Police in Srinagar distributed a laptop to specially-abled lady and grant of financial assistance to Association of Deaf and Dumb & specially-abled cricket players.

Under Civic Action Programme, SSP Srinagar Shri Imtiyaz Hussain handed over a laptop to specially-abled lady resident of Eidgah Srinagar and cheques among the beneficiaries. Besides, provided financial assistance to Association of Deaf & Dumb and 10 specially-abled cricket players.

On the occasion DySP Hqrs Srinagar Ms Syed Sleet Shah and DySP DAR Srinagar Shri Mohammad Rafi were present.

While interacting with the participants, SSP Srinagar assured enduring support and co-operation from J&K Police.

On 12-02-2025, Police Station Soura received a written complaint from one person namely Ali Mohammad Mir resident of Nowshera, stating therein that an unknown thief barged into his cloth shop located in Nowshera and stole cash amounting to Rs ₹27,000. Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 08/2025 under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Soura and investigation initiated.
After strenuous efforts, police team apprehended an accused person identified as Imran Hussain Sofi son of Ghulam Nabi resident of Khumeni chowk, Bemina Budgam within hours after the commission of crime. Upon his disclosure, stolen cash amount of Rs ₹27,000 was also recovered.

Major breakthrough in ATM fraud case

Police arrests accused in card swapping scam in Srinagar

Srinagar, February 14: In a commendable breakthrough, Police in Srinagar have successfully apprehended an accused involved in an ATM card swapping fraud.

On February 12, 2025, Police Post Bagyas received a written complaint from a lady namely Shaheena wife of Zahoor Ahmad Najar resident of Kupwara, stating therein that she along with her daughter, had visited Dental College, Shreen Bagh, for a dental checkup. While using an ATM located within the complex, an unknown individual inside the booth deceptively swapped her ATM card and subsequently withdrew ₹40,000 from her account.

Acting promptly, a case FIR No. 14/2025 U/S 318(4), 305 BNS was registered in Police Station Safakadal and investigation was taken up.

During the course of investigation, a team headed by Incharge Police Post Bagyas was constituted. After strenuous efforts and with the help of technical input and analysis of CCTV footage from the ATM, it led to the identification of the suspect as Burhan Al Rah son of Gh Qadir Rah resident of Bonpora, Nowgam. The accused person has been subsequently arrested, and multiple ATM cards were recovered from his possession.

Further investigation is going on to ascertain the involvement of the accused person in other similar fraudulent activities. More recoveries are expected.

Friday reserved for labelling of artisan products at PTQCC

SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 11: In a facilitative welfare move, the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kashmir has exclusively reserved every Friday of the week for labelling of famed Kashmir Handicraft products belonging to the artisan and weaver community in its Pashmina Testing & Quality Certification Centre (PTQCC), here.

PTQCC is one-stop centre in Craft Development Institute (CDI) for branding and QR coding of 06 world-famous GI registered crafts of Kashmir Pashmina, Kani and Sozni embroidery, Khatamband Ceiling, Walnut Wood Carving and Papier Mache.

Giving details, a spokesperson of the Handicrafts and Handloom Department, advised the artisans and weavers to approach PTQCC on Fridays to get their products certified and QR coded in a time-bound manner. “Friday has been specifically chosen as reserve day to facilitate the artisans and weavers who usually take their weekly off that day,” he added.

Distt admin Srinagar organizes awareness workshop on Cyber security

DC reaffirms commitment to strengthen cyber security

SRINAGAR FEBRUARY 11: In connection with observance of Safer Internet Day 2025, District administration Srinagar organized a day long workshop on Cybersecurity Awareness here today.

Themed around “Together for a Better Internet” the workshop aimed to promote safe and responsible internet usage, particularly among children and young people, while addressing the growing challenges of cyber security.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, while addressing the participants underscored the importance of digital safety and responsible online behaviour & also highlighted the increasing risks posed by cyber threats. He urged officials to maintain cyber hygiene and, to adopt secure digital practices and remain vigilant against cybercrime.

Dr Bilal stressed on the role of government institutions and individuals in fostering a secure online environment.

He emphasized on promoting cyber security awareness to ensure safer and more responsible digital future for citizens.

While commending NIC Srinagar and guest speakers for organizing the event to foster digital awareness among citizens, the DC reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening cyber security measures and educating the public on responsible internet usage.

He also emphasized the need for regular cyber security awareness initiatives in the future.

On the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Syed Ahmad Kataria highlighted the need for proactive cyber security awareness in today’s digital landscape.

Cybercrime experts from the Police Department during the programme provided insights into emerging cyber threats, law enforcement strategies, and best practices for online security. Discussions covered key topics such as data protection, cyber hygiene and fraud prevention.

The workshop included interactive discussions and real-life case studies, helping participants understand the evolving nature of cyber threats and effective ways to mitigate them.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the District Informatics Officer, NIC Srinagar, Syed Mujadid who acknowledged the contributions of guest speakers, and participants.

IUST shines in All India Inter-University Winter Sports

Awantipora, February 1: The Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST) bagged the Winner’s Trophy in the All India Inter-University Winter Sports Championship in Snow Skiing. The university also clinched the Runner-up Trophy in the Boys’ Category and achieved an impressive third-place finish in Ice Stock, marking a significant milestone in its sports journey.

The felicitation ceremony was attended by Shri Satish Sharma, Honourable Sports Minister of J&K, as the Chief Guest, along with Guests of Honour, including Farooq Ahmad Shah (MLA, Gulmarg), Prof. Shakil Ahmed Romshoo (Vice Chancellor, IUST), Prof. Nilofer Khan (Vice Chancellor, KU), and Prof. Prof Ravinder Nath (Vice Chancellor, CUK).

Prof. Shakil Ahmed Romshoo emphasized that this victory reflects IUST’s dedication to promoting athletics and nurturing young talent, further strengthening Kashmir’s reputation as a premier destination for winter sports. Dr. Hilal Ahmad Rather, Assistant Director Physical Education and Sports at IUST, expressed immense pride in the athletes’ dedication and resilience and reiterated IUST’s commitment to fostering sports excellence and encouraging students to compete at national and international levels.

IUST’s athletes delivered outstanding performances in various categories. In Ice Stock, the men’s team, consisting of Abdul Moiz Qadari, Abdul Qadeer Khanday, Mohd Taif Khanday, and Mohd Azim, won gold, while Toyebah Tariq secured a silver medal in the women’s category. In Snow Skiing, Sadiya Ayjaz dominated the women’s category, winning two gold medals. Ryaan Hassan Khan secured a silver medal in Slalom, while Haadi Hassan Khan and Jamid Yaqoob won bronze medals in Slalom and G-Slalom, respectively.

Police solves theft case in Kulgam, accused arrested

Kulgam, January 16: Police in Kulgam have solved a theft case and recovered a stolen vehicle besides, apprehended an accused individual involved in the commission of crime.
On 09/01/2025, Police Station Qazigund received a written complaint from Azam Khan son of Mohd Ismail Khan resident of Ramban A/P Nawa, stating therein that his vehicle bearing registration number JK13A-4716, parked near Jamia masjid Nawa has been stolen.
Accordingly, a case vide FIR No. 08/2025 under relevant section of law has been registered at Police Station Qazigund and investigation was initiated.
The investigation team led by SHO Police Station Qazigund with strenuous efforts and by using all available means tracked down the stolen vehicle at Wullarhama Pahalgam, and was recovered subsequently. During the operation, the Police apprehended the accused, identified as Shahid Ahmad Bhat son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat resident of Wullarhama Pahalgam. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the theft.
J&K Police have reaffirmed their commitment to combating vehicle theft and ensuring the safety of residents. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearby Police unit or Dial-112 without delay so that prompt action against the culprits will be taken.

Srinagar Police Arrests Fraudulent Gold Smith from Bijbehara; Seize Counterfeit Ornaments, busting a major scam

Bijbehara, January 16: Police in Srinagar have apprehended an individual involved in the sale of counterfeit gold ornaments.

On 09/01/2025, a written complaint was lodged at Police Station Nowhatta by an individual namely Nisar Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Bindoo Kokernag, at present living in Srinagar & working as a storekeeper at Lalmandi Srinagar, stating therein that he had purchased gold ornaments from one Mehraj Din Qazi, the proprietor of M/S Soliya Ornaments in Bijbihara. Upon close observation once purchased, they turned out to be fake.

In this connection, a case vide FIR No. 02/2025 under relevant sections of law was registered in Police Station Nowhatta.

Acting swiftly, the investigating team arrested the accused shopkeeper identified as Mehraj Din Qazi son of Gh Mohammad Qazi resident of Bijbihara, and seized the fake jewellery.

During questioning, the accused admitted to deceiving customers by embossing fake hallmarks on gold-like ornaments. The investigating team also learnt that the accused had been making home deliveries of these counterfeit items to various locations of Srinagar City, including Nowhatta.

The laboratory tests of the seized gold jewellery have confirmed that the ornaments in question are indeed counterfeit.

The investigation of the case is going on to uncover any further links in this fraudulent network.

People are requested not to fall prey to fraudulent elements who dupe people on various counts including sale of golden ornaments on cheap rates.
