Night sports activities return in Kashmir as Sports Council organises multiple events

SRINAGAR, MAY 17: The sports activities under different verticals were held in various playfields and indoor sports complexes in J&K.

A Badminton event was held in Sheri Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex, Srinagar under My Youth My Pride in which more than 40 players including both boys and girls participated. The girls single’s title was bagged by Sadia Khaki while Faiza ended up as the runner up and in boys category Shahnawaz won the title while Hadi settled for runner up title.

Meanwhile, Night Football activities resumed in Bakshi Stadium. The special activities in this segment are aimed at providing extend time to the players to hone their skills, said Dr Zaffar Iqbal CAO Sorts Council. Adding that Sports Council under the special activities segments besides mass awareness about the ill effects of drugs is also acquainting the public with the G-20 summit being hosted in J&K.

Late in the evening today, various sports activities and competitions were underway in Gindun Sports Complex in the disciplines of Basket Ball in which Khelo India Girls and Boys team was pitted against Hoopstar Girls Club and Warriors Boys Club respectively while in Kabaddi Academy was playing against Police Kabbadi Teams. In other events of Football and Handball.

Syed Tajdeen was playing against J&K Bank and Al-Murad Handball club was competing with J&K Police hand ball teams. All the matches were in progress under flood lights when the report was being filed.

An athletic and cycling event for school kids under fourteen years of age was also held in Bakshi Stadium today in which more that hundred school kids participated. The kids were thrilled to be part of the event.

In her message to youth, Secretary Sports Council Nuzhat Gull rheteriorated that she along with her team is always there to support players who are aspiring to make it big in the sports. She said that our sports academies in both the divisions are doing a commendable job when it comes to training the young turks tricks of their respective sports and that all the programmes including feedback mechanisms shall be made online soon.

Nuzhat Gull said that automation of Sports Council is under process and all the information relating to games, scrutiny of certificates etc shall be made online for the ease of players and public.

Referring to the Sports Club, she appealed youth to avail the facility which houses Billiards, Chess Carrom, Table Tennis besides a Library with functional canteen which offers food on subsidised rates.

Meanwhile Sports Officer Kashmir Nuzhat Farooq refuted the claims made in a video after the conclusion of a cricket match in Bakshi Stadium. She said that the video has been edited to suit the claims of vested interests and is far from the truth.

The Sports Officer Kashmir requested the general public to report any incident that falls within her domain and assured of a timely redressal.

Two Matches played under Inter-College Cricket Tournament at SP College Ground

SRINAGAR, MAY 17: Two matches were played today in connection with the ongoing inter college cricket tournament organised by the Department of Physical Education at S.P college main ground.

The first match was played between the Department of Zoology and Chemistry and was comprehensively won by Zoology Department by 7 wickets.

The second match of the tournament was played between the Department of Botany and Evs and was won by Botany Department by 4 wickets.

Principal, S.P college, Prof (Dr ) Gh Jeelani Qurashi, along with sports board members Dr. Khurshid Ahmad Parray, Dr Showkat Ahmad Wani, Dr Javid Ahmad, Dr Syed Rashid, Owais Wani, Arshad Salam, Mohammad Hafiz Khan, Arshid Iqbal and Imran Hamdani interacted with all the teams and assured them the best possible infrastructure with a view to organise high end competition in the college.

2-day workshop on Disaster preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir culminates at CoE, Srinagar

SRINAGAR, MAY 17 (2023): The day 2 of the workshop started with Technical Session III in which Bilquess Dar, Consultant DMRRR deliberated upon Emergency Response Support System, India Disaster Resource Network, Decision Support System, Common Alerting Protocol and State Emergency Operation Centre.

The Consultant DMRRR highlighted implementation of various disaster management initiatives in the UT of J&K in which she thoroughly discussed about Emergency Operation Centers. She made audience aware about One India One Emergency Number-112. She impressed upon the volunteers to download Mobile Application namely SACHET https://sachet.ndma.gov.in wherein each individual can get early warnings, alerts and do’s & don’ts of disaster.

She highlighted IDRN (Indian Disaster Resource Network) which is a web based platform for managing inventory of equipment’s, skilled human resources and critical supplies for emergency response.

The Technical Session IV was conducted in the College lawn wherein the SDRF Battalion 1st Kashmir Division provided handholding to the participants regarding different disasters like building collapse, firefighting etc. The volunteers were keenly observing the demonstrations by the team and many volunteers also participated in the same.

The Technical Session V was conducted by the SDRF Battalion 1st Kashmir Division in the auditorium where they gave practical demonstration to the volunteers regarding search and rescue.

The technical session was followed by a question answer session and many queries regarding the disasters and its associated themes were answered by the consultants from DMRRR.

At the end, some of the NSS Officers, NSS volunteers from both colleges and schools shared their views regarding the Two Day Workshop and impressed upon DMRRR and Higher Education Department to conduct such programmes in future also as these programme will give firsthand information to the people regarding disaster preparedness.

The workshop concluded with a valedictory function in which Prof. (Dr) Seema Naz, Principal College of Education Srinagar distributed certificates among the NSS Officers and volunteers from different colleges and schools.

Principal Secretary Education chairs 2 day workshop on “Disaster Preparedness of Jammu and Kashmir”

SRINAGAR, MAY 16: Government College of Education, in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, organized a two day workshop on “Disaster Preparedness of Jammu and Kashmir” under India’s Presidency G-20.

Principal Secretary Education, Alok Kumar, was the chief guest on the occasion.

The workshop was attended by NSS volunteers of Colleges, Higher Secondary Schools and NSS Nodal Officers working in different colleges of Srinagar district.

The inaugural session saw a galaxy of experts and consultants from the Department of DMRRR, trainers from SDRF 1st Battalion, Principals of Degree Colleges of Srinagar district and Head of Institutions of Higher Secondary Schools.

Principal Secretary, in his presidential address, spoke about sensitive geographical locations of Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted that we need to learn lessons from the destruction caused by Kashmir Flood of September 2014 and should take effective preparedness measures in advance.

He concluded his address by mentioning Benjamin Franklin quote “By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail”.

Secretary, Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, Nazim Zai Khan, while speaking on the occasion, said that the department with the help of its SRDF Battalion 1st and 2nd is striving hard to mitigate the impact of disasters on people of Jammu and Kashmir. He also emphasized the need to integrate Disaster Management in school curriculum.

Senior Consultant, DMRRR, Waseem Shafi Dar, presented the structure of Disaster Management in J&K.

Director Colleges, Higher Education Department, Professor Yasmeen Ashai, spoke on disaster vulnerability of J&K, sustainable development and climate change impact on disaster scenario of the UT. She emphasized that such workshops will provide a common platform for all stakeholders to raise their concern regarding the theme.

Later, Principal Secretary released college publications including annual newsletters CASCADE and BAHAR besides Lesson Plan booklet by Interns of GMS Chattabal.

Principal S.P College inaugurates Intra College T20 Men’s Cricket Tournament at College main ground

SRINAGAR, MAY 16: Principal S.P. College, Prof. (Dr) Ghulam Jeelani Qurashi today inaugurated Intra College T20 Men’s Cricket tournament at S.P College main ground, here.

The tournament is being organised by the Department of Physical Education. The first match of the tournament was played between Students of Physics Department and Students of Information Technology

The Principal, who was also Chief Guest at the inaugural function, said that this will provide an opportunity for the sportspersons from all the Departments of the college to showcase their talent and compete with the best of the lot.

He said that it is high time that we garner the talent of our youth and build sportsmanship characters in them.

Speaking on the occasion Secretary, Sports, Cluster University Srinagar Dr. Khursheed Parray, who was also Guest of the Honour for the event said that the college is committed to providing National level sports infrastructure with a view to organise high end competition in the college to harness the potential of budding sportspersons.

Workshop on Innovation & Success Talks programme held at GDC Ganderbal

GANDERBAL, MAY 16: A day-long workshop on Innovation and Success Talks programme was held today at Government Degree College, Ganderbal.

The programme was conducted by the District Skill Committee, Ganderbal and was part of the Entrepreneurship Festival week that commenced from 15th of May.

The weeklong festival is committed to ensure quality, consistency and convergence in the skill ecosystem of the district, besides generating awareness of various initiatives launched by the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.

The aim of today’s event was to reach out to the youth to encourage them to take entrepreneurship as a career option.

Prominent speakers like Shabir Handoo (Chairman Kashmir Angel Network), Abdul Hamid Bhat (Owner of Rahim Greens) and other speakers deliberated on the said topic.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Mehraj-ud-Din Shah also encouraged the youth to take entrepreneurship as a career and assured every possible help from the District Administration.

Principal GDC, Ganderbal thanked the District Administration for organising such events in the college and expressed that such events to be conducted on routine basis, so that the youth can be prevented from drugs and other social threats.

The programme ended with felicitation of mementos to the speakers and special vote of thanks to Deputy Commissioner, Ganderbal for working tirelessly to organize events like this.

Camera Trap confirms presence of Snow Leopard in Kishtwar National Park

JAMMU, MAY 16: Research team of Department of Wildlife Protection, Jammu & Kashmir has confirmed the presence of Snow Leopard in Kishtwar High Altitude National Park through camera trap photographs.

The camera traps installed before snowfall in the National Park have been retrieved and multiple images of snow leopards have been captured in the camera trap frames. In one camera trap frame, three snow leopards have been captured roaming amidst the pristine snow-covered landscapes in Renai catchment of Kishtwar High Altitude National Park. The camera trap images showcase the remarkable adaptability of this elusive species, well-suited to thrive in the challenging high altitude environment of Kishtwar.

The Kishtwar High Altitude National Park, in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir is renowned for its diverse array of flora and fauna, including several rare and endangered species. It encompasses breathtaking alpine meadows, snow-capped peaks and lush green forests, serving as a vital ecological corridor for many wildlife species.

Expressing his happiness over this sighting, Sh. Suresh Kumar Gupta, IFS, Chief Wildlife Warden, Jammu & Kashmir appreciated the efforts of the research team led by Dr. Kumar MK, IFS, Regional Wildlife Warden, Jammu and Majid Bashir Mintoo, Wildlife Warden, Chenab Division Kishtwar. He further added that successful camera trap sighting of the Snow Leopards is an affirmation of the effectiveness of the park’s conservation strategies, which encompasses habitat protection, anti-poaching initiatives, community engagement, and scientific research. These combined efforts have created a conducive environment for the Snow Leopard population to flourish within the park’s boundaries and adjoining areas.

The Snow Leopard holds immense ecological significance, acting as a keystone species in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem. By conserving this apex predator, the Kishtwar High Altitude National Park also safeguards the diverse range of wildlife that co-exists within its boundaries, including the Himalayan Ibex, Musk Deer, and numerous avian species. This sighting of the Snow Leopard in Renai area reinforces the importance of protected areas in safeguarding endangered species and underscores the need for collaborative initiatives involving local communities, governments and conservation organizations. Earlier, the Department of Wildlife Protection Department, through outsourced scientific study, has also captured two leopards (one adult and one sub adult) in a single frame of camera trap in Nanth Nallah. This study is part of Snow Leopard Population Assessment and biodiversity documentation of protected areas being carried by the department.

Lt Governor conducts on-site inspection and reviews ongoing construction work of Transit Accommodation at Zewan

SRINAGAR, MAY 14: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha conducted on-site inspection and reviewed ongoing construction work of the transit accommodation for PM Package employees at Zewan, today.

The Lt Governor appraised the progress of works being carried out at the site, and directed the officials for timely completion of the project.

The housing colony at Zewan will have 39 blocks comprising 936 residential units.

Earlier in the month of April this year, the Lt Governor had inaugurated newly constructed 576 residential accommodations for PM Package Employees at Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal & Shopian.

Sh Shailendra Kumar, Principal Secretary, Public Works (R&B); Sh Vijay Kumar, ADGP Kashmir; Sh Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and other senior officials were present.

JKSC orgainses Golden Age Event in Downtown, Srinagar

SRINAGAR, MAY 14: The Golden Age event was organised by J&K Sports Council (JKSC) early this morning in Downtown Srinagar. The event was aimed at promoting sports among the elderly and encouraging them to stay active and healthy.

Various sports activities and competitions were organized, including athletics and Tug of war and all the participants showed great enthusiasm and enjoyed the activities.

The focus of the event was to emphasise on the importance of being fit, drug-free, and besides creating environment consciousness. The Golden Age sports programs conducted by JKSC across the Union Territory is receiving a positive response from elders.

While J&K Sports Council is actively promoting G-20 awareness and the Fit India program for all ages through a door-to-door campaign, Sports Council has started the special campaign involving elders during morning walks.

Sarmad Hafeez Secretary Youth Services and Sports presided over the function as the chief guest while Nuzhat Gull Secretary Sports Council was guest of honour on the occasion.

While speaking on the occasion, Sarmad Hafeez said that the Sports Council is committed to help young kids achieve their goals in sports and become successful global citizens and while doing so it is also focusing on the importance of parental support and community engagement and thus highlighting and promoting sports among elders who shall help in youth to abstain from drug abuse.

He said campaigns to mobilize elders, parents, and religious leaders against drug abuse have received an overwhelming response and will continue to be carried out in the future.

Samad Hafeez praised the efforts of the Sports Council in organizing such events and emphasized the importance of staying active for a healthy lifestyle.

Samad Hafeez commended the residents of Downtown for their efforts in combating the drug problem among the youth. He recognized their role in socially engaging the youth in activities that promote good health and well-being.

He noted that their contributions have made a significant impact in raising awareness about the dangers of drugs and encouraging the youth to make positive choices.

Nuzhat Gull congratulated the participants for turning out in large numbers and encouraged them to continue their involvement in sports. Gull praised the community’s spirit of collaboration and urged them to continue their efforts in making Downtown a safe and healthy place for everyone.

Nuzhat Farooq, the Divisional Sports Officer who was also present on the occasion along with other officials of Sports Council, highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by the Sports Council to promote sports among all age groups and encouraged the elderly to remain active.

She also said that more such events would be organized in the future.

Syed Shafqat the venue incharge for the event said that the Golden Age event was a great success and received positive feedback from all the attendees.

It was a great example of how sports can bring people of all ages together and promote a healthy and active lifestyle.

Elsewhere in J&K many sports events were held under various verticals and the frequency of the events is expected to increase with improvement in weather conditions.
